Pokémon Omega RWBY

Who: Ren and Nora
What: A queen and her knave on an unexpected Pokémon adventure!
When: No point in particular
Where: Some random woods in the Pokémon world Petalburg Woods in Hoenn? okay that works too
Warnings: n/a

It had started at breakfast in the very literal sense. Nora had managed to convince—or nag, beg, cajole, whatever—Ren that the team was in need of good luck and a morale boost, and that had somehow translated into pancakes. Not just cafeteria pancakes, but homemade, which meant Ren was going to make them. He had, for whatever reason, accepted and gone along with this argument, but after everything had been assembled, Ren had picked up a spatula—and suddenly tripped on nothing and vanished into midair.

After several fruitless minutes trying to locate him inside the cabinets or behind the fridge, Nora had grabbed Magnhild in preparation to start knocking things aside. As soon as her beloved hammer was in hand, that was when she saw it: a whirlpool of light, spinning in the air right where Ren had vanished. Naturally, Nora had jumped right through it.

One falling sensation later, she was in a forest with Ren catching her fall. Not that he seemed to be expecting it. She flew out of the air right behind him, momentum knocking them both over and depositing them in a heap. That was when they met the guide (maybe capitalized, The Guide?) or at least a recording of him, and then were promptly left on their own in the middle of nowhere.

The light slanting through the leaves overhead had an orange cast to it, warning them that night approached. Clambering to the top of a tree had revealed no readily identifiable landmarks so a temporary campsite became the order of the night. Even though they hadn’t even had breakfast yet. Nora’s stomach was a-rumble and that wasn’t fair.

So, while Ren assembled a campfire, Nora went roaming the local vicinity for something resembling edibles. Berries, mushrooms…maybe she could even find a tree leaking sweet sap to eat! What she found, instead, was something completely different and entirely unexpected.

So it was that Ren would hear Nora shouting at the top of her lungs, in a rising tone of great excitement that usually meant trouble: “REEEEEEEEEEEN!!

Isn’t he so lucky. But he’s well and duly shut up, and even Maggi’s delighted at the display. It’s standing up now, trying to nudge its half-eaten berry at his lips.

Ren swallows, looking at the proffered berry uncertainly, before taking a bite out of it, too. There’s no winning with you guys.

“Might as well,” he replies, tired of arguing. Maybe one day one of them can learn Hidden Power so they can fill a treehouse full of plushies and such. Right now Ren opts to put out the fire and gather Magnolia up in his arms. Hopefully they can be passed off as pets in this strange new world.

“Lead the way.” Please. So he can get some honest-to-goodness people breakfast for a change.

Hey with Nora you might as well quit while you’re ahead. Which is something their fellow trainers will learn soon, no doubt.

And of course, even bug nets can morph into powerful weapons, but this isn’t Remnant, and Ren’s quick enough to put two and two together to figure out what “Pokémon” means.

“Nora, wait!” With Maggie cradled in one hand, he reaches out with the other to cut between Magnhild and that kid.

They’ll learn quickly enough that they haven’t seen them all. Ren regards the Wurmple carefully. It doesn’t appear hostile, and yet there’s no telling what it might do when its master had just been threatened.

And as alien as it looks, he can at least identify it as one of the myriad presences that this forest is brimming with.

He turns his attention to the boy, whilst warily keeping one eye on his Pokémon still. “You mean…” he begins, carefully, as he motions to Maggie. “…them, right?”

“Ye—Yeah,” the boy responds, eying Nora just as warily. “I mean…we don’t have to if you don’t want to. It’s fine! Really!!”

That’s why she’s got Ren.

Who, as it happens, is struggling to keep his Pokémon from wriggling out of his grip.

“Magnolia?” The critter in question struggles in the crook of his arm, flapping its tiny hands about in the Wurmple’s general direction, as if eager to make friends with it, or…

“Oh, no.” Ren immediately crosses his arms to lock the Ralts in place, preventing its escape. The aforesaid creature begins squeaking in protest. Ren turns to their challenger.

“We’re sorry to bother you.” Never mind that he’d been the one to approach them first. “We’re leaving now. Come on, Nora.”

And Maggie hangs off of his arms in defeat, somehow achieving a rather sloth-like posture as it does so. Ren pays it no heed for the time being—his mind is still on the new information that kid inadvertently shared with them, and more importantly that…summoning device…

“They’re probably used as weapons,” he muses out loud. Definitely similar to Grimm, but…oddly tame, for all of that. He’s no stranger to kids accomplishing supernatural feats, but there’s no Dust within the vicinity (a problem, when he runs out of ammo) and that boy had maintained a rather carefree attitude about the whole thing until Nora brought out the hammer.

Maybe they’ll find some answers once they reach the city. It can’t be much further.

Even Ren has to admit that he’s enjoying himself quite well, watching all the varieties of this world’s native creatures roam about. It’s even nicer to see that many of them enjoy the companionship of a human being and vice versa. Even battles, he realized, were more for sport than anything else—a way to better themselves and the creatures around them.

“I don’t think so,” he replies, squinting at the sign. Do they even have time to attend school? It’s clear enough, however, that their next priority seems to be in making sense of these creatures around them.

And besides, a school is as good as home to him, even though it’s unlikely they’ll stay that long in here. Still, he nods to Nora, and goes inside.

Thank you random schoolkid. Everyone here, at least, seems mostly friendly and helpful, albeit a bit baffled that these two foreigners would be so unaware of something as pervasive as Pokémon. Regardless, they’ve picked up a lot of important info—including the combat abilities of their new companions. Perhaps it was fortuitous after all, to have run into Pak and Magnolia, if only because such beings have become an essential in moving around this new world of theirs.

But first off, he’s interested in paying a visit to the Pokémon Center—the central hub for “trainers” like them, it seems. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get Pak and Magnolia checked out by the health specialists there, even as the issue of Magnolia’s own abilities continues to nag at him. “Teleport” is a hot or miss, and apparently a localized ability. However, Trace and Synchronize are two such abilities that Magnolia has yet to exhibit, and…really, the more he hears about Pokémon from the other students, the more he realizes that he might have done Magnolia an injustice in keeping it from realizing its potential in battle.

Not that Magnolia’s taking it against him, but he looks down into those huge, huge eyes and wonder at what he’s really got in his hands right now.

He turns to Nora. “Good idea.” Not that the Pokéballs wouldn’t be useful if they get tired or injured, but Ren finds that he enjoys this little bit of warmth in his arms after all.

They make it to the Pokémon Center soon enough—and Ren hands his Ralts over for inspection before moving to sit on a nearby couch. Posted on the wall opposite them is a map of the region—Hoenn—a rather large place, to be sure. And only a fraction of this world’s size.

What if the search for the portal takes forever?

They’ll figure out how to synchronize with this world’s schedule eventually. He’s grateful enough that the day and night cycle appears similar to their world, even if he had only been able to see a single moon from they were at.

The Mossdeep Space Center is still a ways away, after all.

He smiles when Nora sags against him, leaning his head back against hers when he finds that she’s conked out at last. He’s not really tired himself—as a matter of fact, all that studying had been more stimulating for him than anything else. Not to mention there’s that little magazine rack in the corner to keep him occupied…

That said, he’d been about to leaf through an article about some sort of Pokémon beauty pageant when the nurse arrived with both of their Pokémon in tow. Magnolia leaped gladly onto his lap as he briefly chatted with the nurse, noting with some surprise that this bowl-cut critter was a “he” after all, and that it was very important should he ever consider how he wants to facilitate his Pokémon’s growth and development.

A surprisingly low maintenance Pokémon for such a high maintenance trainer like Nora. Then again, she does do well with characters like that…

Anyway, by the time that half hour elapses Ren was able to inquire further regarding the whereabouts of their new world, including where to get food. Battling will have to be a necessity, though it seems that they can live off of the charity of the Pokémon Center as well. Out in the wild though, that might not be such a hot idea, and Ren realizes that they’ll probably have to go into a lot of uncharted territory in order to find that damn portal.

He pokes Nora gently on her cheek. “Nora?”

Ren is probably tone deaf lbr

“We should get something to eat.” Berries for sustenance does not make for a decent repast, after all. “Though they haven’t got blueberry pancakes in the cafeteria.”

Nora has always been good at adjusting to things…then again, he and Magnolia are pretty comfortable in each other’s company, too.

That said, he shakes his head. “I’m afraid it’s a little late for that now.” It’s approaching dinnertime, after all. “But there’s a grocery nearby; we can pick up some supplies later.”

There’s just the issue of money—which…Ren will elaborate later on. No need to get Nora all excited before he gets a chance to replenish his energies first…

So sue him for wanting some foods and wanting to get his Ralts all nice and fed before they start considering Pokémon battles. And anyway, mealtimes are always a good chance to mingle with others, though at this rate Ren will miss the solitude they enjoyed at the woods together.

“Yeah,” he says quietly. “I want to go home, too.”

But with mealtime over they emerge from the Pokémon Center flat broke still, but Ren is at least in better spirits than before. They could always turn in here for the night later on, but there’s still enough light outside for them to explore this city.

Then again, they haven’t really gotten that far before someone’s shouting “Help!” and a red blur dashes past them, making a beeline for the Rusturf Tunnel.
