Pokémon Omega RWBY

Who: Ren and Nora
What: A queen and her knave on an unexpected Pokémon adventure!
When: No point in particular
Where: Some random woods in the Pokémon world Petalburg Woods in Hoenn? okay that works too
Warnings: n/a

It had started at breakfast in the very literal sense. Nora had managed to convince—or nag, beg, cajole, whatever—Ren that the team was in need of good luck and a morale boost, and that had somehow translated into pancakes. Not just cafeteria pancakes, but homemade, which meant Ren was going to make them. He had, for whatever reason, accepted and gone along with this argument, but after everything had been assembled, Ren had picked up a spatula—and suddenly tripped on nothing and vanished into midair.

After several fruitless minutes trying to locate him inside the cabinets or behind the fridge, Nora had grabbed Magnhild in preparation to start knocking things aside. As soon as her beloved hammer was in hand, that was when she saw it: a whirlpool of light, spinning in the air right where Ren had vanished. Naturally, Nora had jumped right through it.

One falling sensation later, she was in a forest with Ren catching her fall. Not that he seemed to be expecting it. She flew out of the air right behind him, momentum knocking them both over and depositing them in a heap. That was when they met the guide (maybe capitalized, The Guide?) or at least a recording of him, and then were promptly left on their own in the middle of nowhere.

The light slanting through the leaves overhead had an orange cast to it, warning them that night approached. Clambering to the top of a tree had revealed no readily identifiable landmarks so a temporary campsite became the order of the night. Even though they hadn’t even had breakfast yet. Nora’s stomach was a-rumble and that wasn’t fair.

So, while Ren assembled a campfire, Nora went roaming the local vicinity for something resembling edibles. Berries, mushrooms…maybe she could even find a tree leaking sweet sap to eat! What she found, instead, was something completely different and entirely unexpected.

So it was that Ren would hear Nora shouting at the top of her lungs, in a rising tone of great excitement that usually meant trouble: “REEEEEEEEEEEN!!

It warms his heart to see, if nothing else, that Nora’s really good with the Pokémon. But he helps Pak up himself—guess they’ll be exchanging Pokémon for a while, eh? But Ren is in a much better mood than when they’d started out.

And more importantly, he can’t deny his own Pokémon any battles now. Not when Magnolia over there is even more determined to win Nora’s praise. He can’t even feel jealous about it—after all, loving Nora is a matter of course.

Of course…

“Having them around will make searching for a portal a lot easier,” he remarks, all business once more. “We’ll both have to take some time to train them.” Which means, of course, that their return home might be delayed—albeit for the greater good, right?

And of course it goes without saying that even their Pokémon are expected to work together as a team.

“We might have to wait for them to evolve, too.” Why yes, there’s that other interesting tidbit they’d learned at the Pokémon school. The ability to grow stronger and better than what they were before. Could the Grimm manage that, too?

Plus, Magnolia with a combat skirt. Worth it.

Of course, the way to Steven is perilous in terms of even more Pokémon attacks, but the more they press on, the better they’re getting at it. And well, they’ve got plenty of medical supplies to spare just in case anything should go too badly, but it hadn’t been necessary even as they’d finally reached Steven somewhere in the deeper recesses of the Granite Cave.

Fucking rock collectors, man.

Steven thanks them for the letter and offers them a TM of his favorite move—one that, unfortunately, neither of their Pokémon can use. Before they part ways, however, he mentions that heading to Sinnoh might be a good idea if they want to improve their Pokémon further.

They’ll meet again, anyway. Ren’s not too concerned about any cryptic hints dropped their way, but it does give voice to his concerns that they really need a feasible way of getting around this world. Mr. Briney could only take them so far…

When they reach the surface again Ren whips out his PokéNav, flipping over to the map function, which, alas, only contains a map of Hoenn and the nearby regions. There’s a possibility that a portal might not even be on this region, and the thought of it irks him.

Then again, he’s a bit hesitant to let go of his Pokémon so soon…

Worriedly, he turns to Nora. “Where do we go from here?”

Well, if there were any portals in the well-paved roads, then there should’ve been news of it by now, should it? What they really need to do is to look in the same secret places that Pokémon hide in—the paths least traveled. At least, he thinks so, though checking on the news from time to time wouldn’t hurt, either.

His thoughts amid Nora’s ramblings are interrupted by a shadow flitting across the sky—Steven, on the back of his Skarmory, no doubt on their way for more rocks up ahead. In some ways Ren figures they’ll have to emulate him to a degree, chipping away at whatever they can find for a chance to go home.

In the meantime though, that’s inspiration aplenty for one day. He turns to Nora once again.

“We’ll need a flying Pokémon.”

Right well if you hadn’t taken too weeks I might have remembered the setting’s mythos huff!!!

Ren is very firm, however: “We’re going to need something friendlier.” And they might as well get started, or this cache of Pokéballs Mr. Stone gave them will go to waste.

Ren considers this for a moment. After all, Pokémon seem attracted to her positive energy for the most part—maybe she’ll manage to befriend some Flying type before they realize it. Of course, as Nora had pointed out, there had been several battles in the Granite Cave that proved their experiences to the contrary. Pokémon, it seems, come in a variety of personalities—some of which bordered on the masochistic—and they might have to wing it if they’re ever going to get anywhere.

Jaune and Pyrrha must be worried by now…

Will they ever go back home?

It’s really the Nevermore that’s got dibs on…

“A Nevermore might run away from you on sight.”

It is a compliment, however wistful. He almost misses the Nevermores because, after all, they’re part of home. Which…home kind of sucks in a lot of ways like that, but at least it meant a place where he and Nora could stay together.

“Since we haven’t found any around here…” Is that a good or a bad thing? “We could try looking for some bird-types, like the one Steven used to fly away from here.” What was that again? Damn, they really do need a PokéDex here.

“That’s an option.” And it will probably involve climbing tall mountains and a bunch of other difficult shit in order to find a decent-sized one, no doubt. Then again, he isn’t completely discounting the option: high places offer good views for portal-seekers, as well as any intrepid bird Pokémon willing to help them see the sights.

He looks at their current lineup and decides that they can’t possibly sprout wings and carry them off. “Or we could try catching one of the smaller ones and seeing if they’ll evolve into something bigger.”

He actually looks a bit incredulous at his own suggestion—because it means more time investment, plus, it’s weirdly crazy in its own way. Nora’s rubbing off on him help

…And now he’s on high alert as he quickly moves to stop her. “Nora, wait!

Is he the only one of them who’s figured out how combat here works? Yep. She’d been asleep while he was receiving his little cultural education back in Rustboro, after all, and the boat ride hadn’t been conducive to much conversation, it looks like.

Still, he moves quickly enough, though Magnolia’s the first to grab her by the ankle in a panicked attempt to keep her from fucking up the ecosystem.

“You might scare them off,” Ren says, by way of explanation, once he’s caught up. Well, and she might kill them off by accident too, but Nora can put two and two together for that.

“We have to do it their way,” he points out, casting a glance at both their Pokémon, exceedingly grateful that sharp reflexes accompanied her trained and electrified muscles. While he didn’t mind leaving themselves out of the fighting (the portal is more important—getting back to Beacon is more important), he could understand her issue to some extent.

What were they supposed to do while they’re here, anyway? He relaxes and Magnolia relaxes, looking inward, opposite the shore, to the vegetation surrounding the Granite Cave. Dewford is a small town, but it is not completely bereft of natural resources, even if most of them seem to have made their way underground.

“I think…” He looks to Magnolia next, who stares upward. “I think this is their battle, not ours.” So they should see what their Pokémon want, first.
palmstrike: (✽ Everybody was kung-fu fighting)

[personal profile] palmstrike 2016-01-06 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
“Exactly.” Close enough. He’s heard about the Pokémon League, but it’s only a minor blip in his radar considering that they’re training their Pokémon for entirely different objectives.

“Besides…” He looks to Pak and sees her slump to the ground without further ceremony. “There are other ways to acquire Pokémon. Ones that don’t have to involve fighting.”
palmstrike: (✽ From funky Chinatown)

[personal profile] palmstrike 2016-01-07 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ren isn’t as affectionate with his Pokémon, but Magnolia’s horn glows warmly as always as he takes his usual spot next to his master’s leg. Underneath the brim of his mushroom-cap bowl cut is a pair of wide, fierce little eyes, and Ren knows that he’s itching for another Pokémon battle, itching for another opportunity to improve himself. The fact that he’s holding back means a lot to Ren, who sees a need for balance in whatever their endeavors.

Like now. “You’ve already been making friends.” Friends, as in plural, as in, Pak is not the only Pokémon she’s bonded with. Ren gives Magnolia a little pat on the head for some emphasis.
palmstrike: (✽ They were chopping them down)

[personal profile] palmstrike 2016-01-07 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
“Right.” For a moment he looks very pleased as Nora seemingly gets the gist of it, before he does a double take.

“What? I—no. Yes.” Technically that idea is pretty sound. Baiting and trapping Pokémon could work, but…well now it’s Ren’s turn to sort out his thoughts on that note.
