Pokémon Omega RWBY
Who: Ren and Nora
What: A queen and her knave on an unexpected Pokémon adventure!
When: No point in particular
Where:Some random woods in the Pokémon world Petalburg Woods in Hoenn? okay that works too
Warnings: n/a
It had started at breakfast in the very literal sense. Nora had managed to convince—or nag, beg, cajole, whatever—Ren that the team was in need of good luck and a morale boost, and that had somehow translated into pancakes. Not just cafeteria pancakes, but homemade, which meant Ren was going to make them. He had, for whatever reason, accepted and gone along with this argument, but after everything had been assembled, Ren had picked up a spatula—and suddenly tripped on nothing and vanished into midair.
After several fruitless minutes trying to locate him inside the cabinets or behind the fridge, Nora had grabbed Magnhild in preparation to start knocking things aside. As soon as her beloved hammer was in hand, that was when she saw it: a whirlpool of light, spinning in the air right where Ren had vanished. Naturally, Nora had jumped right through it.
One falling sensation later, she was in a forest with Ren catching her fall. Not that he seemed to be expecting it. She flew out of the air right behind him, momentum knocking them both over and depositing them in a heap. That was when they met the guide (maybe capitalized, The Guide?) or at least a recording of him, and then were promptly left on their own in the middle of nowhere.
The light slanting through the leaves overhead had an orange cast to it, warning them that night approached. Clambering to the top of a tree had revealed no readily identifiable landmarks so a temporary campsite became the order of the night. Even though they hadn’t even had breakfast yet. Nora’s stomach was a-rumble and that wasn’t fair.
So, while Ren assembled a campfire, Nora went roaming the local vicinity for something resembling edibles. Berries, mushrooms…maybe she could even find a tree leaking sweet sap to eat! What she found, instead, was something completely different and entirely unexpected.
So it was that Ren would hear Nora shouting at the top of her lungs, in a rising tone of great excitement that usually meant trouble: “REEEEEEEEEEEN!!”

Well it’s over and done with now and thanks to Nora’s quick reactions they’re a lot more well off now than they were when they woke up this morning. Now they just need a hotel room and a shower and someone that knows a little less about Pokémon and a little more about por—
Was that a cry for help or a Pokémon roar? Nora has Magnhild out in no time, launcher formed, and starts looking for a target.
no subject
But yes. Their next target is a Team Aqua grunt attempting to commandeer both ship and seagull, and laughing most insidiously as the pair of seemingly harmless children come into view. Furthermore, their Pokémon, it must be said, don’t quite have the same sense of ferocity about them as that Carvanha the grunt is using to keep the distraught old man at bay.
StormFlower’s already drawn and Magnolia’s staring determinedly at the Poochyena; Ren nods to Nora—he’ll be taking this one, thanks. A hostage situation requires more delicacy than a grenade launcher to the face, and Ren leaps into action, putting himself and his Pokémon between Mr. Briney and the Carvanha.
The villain sneers. His sissy little Pokémon isn’t going to be able to stand up to a mighty carnivore—plus there’s that whole type disadvantage issue thrown in. Ren knows; he certainly hasn’t had much opportunity to train his Ralts as of yet.
Still, he can afford to not be sporting in this case, by clambering onto the boat and immediately disabling the man with a few well-timed hits and kicks before Peeko is safely in Magnolia’s embrace and the man’s got his arm twisted behind his back, which Ren threatens to outright snap off if he doesn’t recall his Pokémon right now.
no subject
As any good Pokémon, though, they move to try and defend their master anyway—but are promptly recalled back into their Pokéballs by the grunt, who is very much in favor of his arms staying right where they belong and not snapped.
These kids are building up quite the reputation for themselves in short order, but hey, they're 17. That makes them really old in Pokemon adventure years compared to all the 10-year-olds around.
no subject
But it’s a good thing that Rustboro is fairly close; with the PokéNav, it becomes all the easier to turn the crook in to the proper authorities. After that, of course, a grateful Mr. Briney gladly offered them a voyage to Dewford and wherever else they pleased.
They’re on their way to Dewford now—a voyage that they are told will take some hours yet, so they might as well turn in to the cabin for the night. Mr. Briney, for his part, refused to do the same—he’s a passionate seaman, after all, and perfectly at home with a quiet voyage under the moonlight with his Wingull for company.
Ren, however, is feeling a bit too restless to actually turn in just yet, and so he remains on deck, gazing wistfully out into the horizon, wondering if the way back to Beacon lay there.
no subject
She’ll be singsonging Ren awake to morning daylight again in no time.
no subject
They’re in Dewford before they know it. Trendy phrases about in Dewford Hall and a nice fisherman nearby lectured them on the joys of fishing—even handing them one of his old rods just to help them get started. It’s not a bad idea, after all, to train a Pokémon for traveling across the ocean—especially if they plan on reaching other nearby islands; or, if the Pokémon is trained well enough, even to far off continents.
It’s certainly a fun idea, but...
They’re standing outside Granite Cave, which, as a popular destination for rock collectors, is where Steven Stone is likely to be. It sure is dark inside though, and this humble little seaside town is lacking in a PokéMart from which to purchase a flashlight from. Torches might not be a bad idea though, since they apparently have to go through the gym if they want their Pokémon to learn a certain move.
Besides, even if they did ask Mr. Stone for Steven’s PokéNav ID, the cave might have blocked the reception if Steven’s deep enough inside. Not that Ren isn’t already fiddling with his device, anyway.
“Maybe we should just wait for him to come out,” he mutters.
no subject
“Don’t be silly, Ren, there’s no time to just stand around and wait!”
And there she goes, swallowed up by the dimness. Too bad she doesn’t count as an electric-type capable of learning Flash.
no subject
And besides, the guy they’re looking for is the Hoenn League Champion. Surely whatever’s happening in there can’t be that bad…
He nods to Magnolia, and calmly follows Nora inside, peering into the dimness. He puts away his PokéNav, since it’s evident that its dim lighting won’t do them much good even in here. They could probably construe this as a sort of Aural training anyway, why not?
After a while, he stops; his Ralts stopping with him. “Nora?” Where the hell did she get to this time—
no subject
Aaaand grab! Her hand pops from the shadows of the tumbled boulders littering the floor, firmly taking Ren by his. He totally sensed her coming, right? Because she sure didn’t think to warn him of her approach. Silly boy, getting lost in the dark.
“This way, Ren!”
no subject
“You shouldn’t be so loud here, though,” he points out. “You might disturb the Pokémon.”
Do you really want to get ambushed by like a colony of Zubat…
no subject
“But if we don’t make noise, how will Steven hear us coming?” she retorts, though that’s not a go at smartassing so much as it is just Nora thinking aloud in Nora fashion.
no subject
Well, not until they’ve come across the first of the tunnels leading underground, anyway. So sue Ren for not having much experience in the way of spelunking.
no subject
Still, she does stop when they reach a kind of crossroads, the cavern branching off into multiple directions. Hmm, maybe if she blasts a hole in the roof….
no subject
“We’ll handle it.” He nods to Magnolia, and they both step forward, shutting their eyes as they attempt to sense the presences around them. Something—very faint—catches at the far radius of Ren’s aura, and he opens his eyes, pointing to one of the caves leading further down.
no subject
She waits patiently enough until he points, after which she chirrups a bright, “Right!” By which she means ‘got it’ and not the actual direction.
Either way, she just takes that outstretched hand of his and starts leading the way again.
no subject
Eventually, however, Ren manages to stumble upon another living soul before he can sense it. In this case, it’s a Geodude, shaken up from its slumber when Ren had tripped over it. To the latter’s surprise the Pokémon floats up in the air, sprouting a pair of arms so sinewy they might as well have been hewn from the very rock.
Actually, there’s no doubt about it, and he’s already about to draw out his guns before Magnolia eagerly weaves his way between both his and Nora’s legs, eager to confront the creature before his master could stop him.
no subject
Nora’s slinging out Magnhild at the same time she sees Ren start to reach for StormFlower, but then Magnolia skitters forward and gives them all pause. Even Pak lifts his head with a soft snort and focuses on the other Pokémon, scratching an itch on his nose with a claw.
no subject
“Magnolia.” He’d meant to scold, but the name had come out rather uncertainly. This is indeed what Pokémon are meant to do, right? Challenge each other and grow stronger for it? Ren doesn’t forget his lessons so easily, after all, and he’s learned plenty during his stay at Rustboro.
The Ralts gives a growl—tentative, at first, before Maggie’s drawing in all the air he could into his tiny lungs and letting out a growl that’s about as fierce as a kitten yawning. The Geodude looks baffled at first, before raising its fist and bringing it down onto its opponent—
no subject
And then—and it’s a home run! Which is to say that’s one (1) Geodude shooting through the air and slamming into a far cavern wall hard enough to get embedded in its own little crater, courtesy of one hammer-wielding Nora. Actually it looks rather comfortable for a rock-type Pokémon and all. A hole fitted just for it.
Nora does not pursue. It’s perhaps an uncharacteristic bit of restraint from her…but these Pokémon are a lot closer to wild animals than Grimm. Why, she didn’t even accompany that side-swing with a triumphant cry of any kind. It’s no fun bashing little animals around, but you gotta protect your own, right?
no subject
Magnolia, in the meantime, remains unscathed as he wriggles out from under Pak.
no subject
With Ren tending to Pak, Nora kneels down and pets Magnolia’s hairlike cap. “Good teamwork!” she praises.
no subject
“That was pretty brave,” he remarks, wondering if the little guy can understand him. Magnolia, in the meantime, glows under Nora’s praise, his little horn growing warmer as she pets him.
And Ren watches them both with a smile, recalling what info he could from Rustboro. Of course a Ralts would find themselves easily attracted to Nora and her boundless cheer, but hey. Ren figures he could stand to give his own Pokémon some more.
“They could still use more training,” he points out, to Nora. “But as the junior members of Team Marzipan, they’re doing pretty well.”
no subject
“It was a good first effort and a good tag-team! They’ll be as good as you and me in no time!” Nora agrees.
Pak gives himself a little shake, reaching back to comb his claws through his wet-spritzed patch of fur there, but he does feel better as soon as the medicine has worked its way down to his skin. The Pokémon chuffs a contented sound as he looks back over his shoulder with a sleepily pleased face, then shuffles back up onto his feet at last.
Only to put those long sloth-arms of his up and drape them over Ren, half ‘hug me’ and half ‘carry me’. Another friend has been made.
no subject
And more importantly, he can’t deny his own Pokémon any battles now. Not when Magnolia over there is even more determined to win Nora’s praise. He can’t even feel jealous about it—after all, loving Nora is a matter of course.
Of course…
“Having them around will make searching for a portal a lot easier,” he remarks, all business once more. “We’ll both have to take some time to train them.” Which means, of course, that their return home might be delayed—albeit for the greater good, right?
no subject
She sets him on her shoulders like a kid and holds on to his teeny little feet to help keep him in place.
Don’t worry, though, she’s not ignoring Ren or what he has to say. “A team of four can do a lot more than a team of two, especially if they’re strong enough to kick butt on their own! We’ll have to get them on a regimen, teach them how to spar and how to watch each other’s backs!”
