Who: Reno and Makishima
What: Reno wanders modern Earth and takes a fool chance.
When: Modern times, in the last decade.

A fateful night under the mistletoe just a few days after Reno stumbled into the boring-ass world called "Earth" and he ended up with a phone number and a lingering taste in his mouth. He waited a long time to call. Not months, but a couple of weeks, once he learned about the local holidays and realized they were meant for family and close friends, not date with strangers you snogged in bars. Well, depending on your upbringing, anyways, but he figured Makishima for a more quality figure than himself.

So it was that the day after Christmas, Makishima's phone rang and it wasn't someone from Japan or any of his relatives. It was the lazy drawl and accent of the guy from the bar.

"It's uh...it's Reno. Remember? From the party?" he offered up as gently as possible in case Maki didn't have the privacy to talk. Usually Reno didn't think about much, saying whatever he felt like when he felt like it, but the weeks of wandering around (which was actually more than a month for him, being as he went portal jumping in the meanwhile) gave him time to think about how not to screw everything up in the first hour. It was pretty sweet having time to make plans and rev himself up. Plus it meant time to beat the crap out of some punks to rip them off, shuck their wallets and get enough local scratch to take a guy out for a night on the town and not look like a cheap-ass.

Good times.

"Look uh, I know it's been a while but I thought you'd like time with the family and all. But apparently the holiday was done yesterday and I didn't want you to forget me" the Turk laughed, trying not to sound desperate. Fucking hard to do when you were playing out a seen from goddamn Lady and the Tramp. Good thing he'd never seen the movie. Loveless was bad enough.

"That dinner? Uhh...you hungry?"

Probably best not to ask, since Reno wasn't keeping any secrets. He didn't lie, he just didn't tell the whole truth, either. He told Maki precisely where he was from, without direct details, but if he were asked? He'd probably tell the truth anyways, because honesty was the only thing you gave a high-quality person like Makishima. even if it totally screwed you.

"I'd like that," the redhead replied with a slow smile, pleased by the light overture. Reaching up and scratching the side of his nose, he glanced away, shrugging slightly.

"Well, if you're ever interested in traveling with me, there's that, too. I can tell you right now, the kinda mountains we have back where I'm from are something to behold. And cycling in the city would be real easy, too, since not a lot of people own cars or anything and bikes are pretty rare, too. Everyone uses the trains and stuff. I think you'd like it."

"Ah ha...that does sound nice. It's not so bad in the country, but in the city you can have some real jerks." He'd had more than one car honk at him thinking they had the right of way. People could be woefully ignorant about proper bike etiquette versus an actual motor vehicle.

He really wasn't sure what else they could talk about. Never mind that they were two complete strangers, Makishima was simply horrible at small talk.

He stoke another one of Reno's onion rings, favoring them to the fried cheese he had ordered for himself. Not that the fried cheese wasn't good but he knew from experience they'd be really hot if he tried to eat them right away and a burnt tongue wasn't something he wanted to deal with right then and there.

Reno wasn't quite as quick on the eating draw as Maki, snagging a cheese stick in retaliation for his onion rings being eaten, only to have to sit and reverse blow long enough to save his tongue. Divine retribution, he supposed. Don't steal from the date. He'd have grumbled if he wasn't distracted by the sudden silence. Unsure if it was Maki floundering for subject matter or the teen simply trailing off, Reno took his own chances.

"I don't actually know how to ride a bike," he stated, taking a sip of his ordered Guinness to simmer down before looking over at Maki with a nod.

"Not even kidding. Never been on one in my whole life. Never had a reason to. Always either walked everywhere or took the train. You sound pretty passionate about it, though, so there's gotta be somethin' to it."

He smirked and snickered at Reno's distress at the hot stick of cheese. He deserved it. There were far less of the mozzarella sticks than the onion rings, but Maki had gotten them to share after all. "You should wait for those to cool off," He teased.

The admission that Reno had never actually learned how to ride a bike genuinely shocked and surprised Maki. He leaned closer towards Reno, eyes wide and surprised. "N-Never? Are you serious?" How had he never learned to ride a bike?

OKay sure maybe their city wasn't really set up for it, but every kid learned how to ride a bike didn't they?

He leaned back in his seat, staring at Reno with a teasing smile on his face. "I guess that's something we'll have to fix, sho." He grinned. "There's nothing better than riding a bike!" Okay maybe sex, but Maki hadn't had that yet, so he really couldn't judge.

"Nothing? I find that extremely difficult to believe," Reno replied with a dubious expression, plucking up an onion ring and munching itas he began browsing the menu in earnest.

"I can think of a few things that are probably better. How about you teach me how to ride a bike and I teach you something else?" he asked, not looking up from the menu as he delivered the casual comment. The real intent was nonsexual, since he had a lot of things he could do that he bet Maki couldn't, but if the teen took it sexually, all the more fun for conversation.

He was being careful not to make his own usual pushy overtures, no tugs and touches, no kisses or groping. He wasn't paying Maki to spend time with him, he was paying other people to make the time spent together more enriched. Like with food and shit. So expecting to get laid was out of the question. At least until like...what...date 3? What was the etiquette for that? He'd have to look it up later, or just cross his fingers that Maki was so interested in him that they dispensed with propriety and did whatever came natural.

Reno wasn't the kind of person to lose respect for someone that went down on even the first date. He had more respect for people that were just honest. He'd bone before he even knew a person's name, really. getting to know then afterwards was fine, too. Maki was obviously a different caliber, but one could always stand to be surprised.

"I dunno what a steak pie is, but I love steak and I love pie, so shit, might as well get that. What do you recommend? I'm relying on you to keep me from poisoning myself here, yo."

Maki wasn't exactly savvy on the etiquette of dates and sex. He knew enough to know that doing anything on the first date, and definitely doing anything when they first met, would have been out of the question. He'd be lying if he said there wasn't an attraction there. Maybe Maki had a thing for pushy people.

"Heh...Okay! You're on." Maki picked up one of the mozzarella sticks, dipped it and put it into his mouth in an unconsciously sexy manner.

He looked over Reno's shoulder at the menu. He had a feeling Reno was more of a meat eater so the salads were probably out. "Sho...Everything is good, but you might like that." He pointed to beef wellington."

"Would I? Well, alright then," he replied, turning his head enough that their noses brushed briefly and he smiled broadly. Shouldn't have peeked over his shoulder if he didn't want at least a little teasing. reno's blue eyes flicked away again, scanning the menu and pointing out the dessert section as well.

"You like sweets? I like pretty much anything bad for me. split something with me so we both feel less guilty?"

The sudden touch of their noses in what was typically known as an Eskimo kiss made Maki blush. He looked away, cheeks burning hotly and he let out a nervous laugh. Wow that was smooth, Reno.

"Ha ha, sure. Whatever you want, sho." He grinned nervously. Maki liked sweets, and savory things too. The idea of sharing food, especially dessert, sounded extremely romantic to Makishima and he had to appreciate the idea. Reno was doing a good job of wooing the climber.

The waiter came back right on time, asking their orders where Maki asked for the potted shrimp with pickles. It wasn't an overly huge dish, but as thin as Maki was it wasn't too hard to infer that perhaps he wasn't really a big eater.

The redhead didn't mind if his date ate heavy or light, as long as he ate and enjoyed himself. for his part, reno took Maki's advice on the order, though he did pick a dessert of some sort of bread pudding with some crap on it called anglaise. He had no idea what any of it was, but hey, he was an adventurous guy.

While they waited for the food, Reno leaned back in the booth, folding his arm across his chest to avoid the old stretch and wrap an arm around technique. Smooth? Him? Not so much, but everyone had a lucky day.

"So this bike thing. That what you're going to school for or uh...something you do just for yourself?" he asked, carrying on the light chatter while attempting to learn more about his companion.

That Reno didn't try for the whole arm stretch trick actually amused Maki. He could honestly say he appreciated it though as the date continued he had to wonder if maybe he wouldn't mind that kind of physical attention. He smiled, the expression oddly natural around this strange red-head and it only seemed to grow when Reno brought up cycling again.

"It's the greatest thing, sho!" He raised a hand in a gesture that said it was only the best thing in the world. "I'm the climber for my school's team but ah..." He shook his head as he lowered his hand. "I don't think I'll be going pro. That's something for people like Kinjou and Fukutomi." He waved his hand back and forth as he spoke as if each word had a gesture to it.

He was sure both captains would have great things in store for them. They were aces, not one trick ponies, though Maki was still breaking some serious records here with his climbing ability. It was all for fun though.

What Reno didn't do by way of cliche physical attempts he made up for with the more subtle tells. Turning in the booth enough to draw one leg up in the seat, he leaned forward just a little, reclining against the table with one arm, the other resting against his lap as he tilted his head and really listened to the teen. Pursing his lips and nodding slowly at Maki's obvious enthusiasm, Reno smirked and cocked a brow.

"It's the greatest thing, but you're not interested in pursuing it further? Seems to me like you're clipping the bird's wings, man. If you're passionate about something, you shouldn't let anything get in your way, yo. Nothin'. Besides, man, what's life without adventure and risks? I dunno who Kinko Biloba and Fuk-U-Too are - friends or something? - but you obviously love the shit. Still, I'm not really one to talk. I didn't exactly see myself in the position I'm in back when I was a kid. Though I can definitely say I'm a pretty good warning for what happens if you don't go for what you love," the redhead laughed, lowering his head enough to scratch at his eyebrow and look away, obviously embarrassed.

"I just think a lot of people are better served following their hearts instead of doing sensible, safe things. Sometimes those things aren't any safer or sensible than the alternative - we're just too afraid to risk finding out what we went after wasn't what we wanted. All the while what we should be seeing is the fun we had in getting there."

"A-ah...well..." Maki rubbed at the side of his head and blushed. He couldn't help but laugh at the poor way in which Reno tried to say Kinjou and Fukutomi's name and he made a mental note to try and correct him on that when he got the chance.

"There are other things I want to do too, sho." He smiled and played with one of his mozzarella sticks like he just needed to do something with his hands. "I'm actually going into school for fashion, sho." He grinned over at Reno. "My cycling might not make headlines but my clothing will."

There was always the hobby of cycling after all, and as long as Maki had time to do that it was all he really needed. For now he'd be happy competing with his team, but never professionally.

"Fashion? Oh shit, we got ourselves an artist over here!" Reno suddenly shouted, pointing at Maki before reaching over with a grin and gently shoving the teen's shoulder.

"That's pretty sweet, too! You gotta love fashion to go after it, yo. That's a fuckin' passion, too, yeah? Good for you! Back up plan and all. I totally didn't have a better plan that "make good money", which I mean, I do, but the work is shit. Fashion though, huh? Need a model?" he asked suddenly, grinning broader still.

"I'm totally open to nudes. Totally, yo."

The speed in which Maki's cheeks went red was rather impressive. He turned his head away and dipped his head so it fell over his face like an iridescent green and red curtain. Yes because that was going to help hide him from prying eyes. It wasn't so much that he was shy but the gesture was completely embarrassing! Yup this guy was definitely like Toudou in many ways, just as loud and flashy an a completely idiot.

"N-nah...I don't think you'll be modeling clothes if you're naked." He peeked back at Reno. His eyes were twinkling mischievously. "Or do you just want to get naked around me, sho?" Two could play this game, though Maki really didn't think he was good at it.

"Maybe I just believe in freedom of expression, yeah?" he grinned back, cocking a brow again and holding both hands up to gesture at himself. "Or maybe I feel like it would be a travesty to keep the world from enjoying a national treasure."

Cocky to a fault, Reno licked his bottom lip between grinning, bared teeth and tosses his hair, delighted to spar a little. Fortunately Maki was saved from a real onslaught since the food just happened to arrive at that moment, taking a little wind out of Reno's quickly filling sails.

"All I'm sayin'," he followed up, a little less pomp but no less mischief in his, "I'd wear whatever you like me to wear, and I'd take off whatever you wanted me to take off."

Lucky Maki. With the way Reno was puffing up Maki was liable to get bowled right over. He moved back a bit to allow the waiter to put their food down on the table and in so doing he trailed his fingers over the top of Reno's leg. Yup he could play this game though he really had no idea what he was doing.

"I'll keep that in mind, sho." He had to admit, Reno did have a good body and he cleaned up nice. He'd just finished one term, but if Reno was willing to stick around long enough there'd be another showing in the spring.

He took up his fork, removing his hand from Reno's leg and took a bite of his food. Please don't make him choke on it.

The hand on the leg move was incentive enough not to play coy, but it wasn't Reno's first horse race and he knew better than to believe for even one second that Maki really knew what he was getting into. Nit the first date. Not this time.

Well...unless Maki was really insistent.

Reno could hope.

"I've modeled before, actually," he mused aloud, prodding his food with a fork before shrugging and digging in. After some of the things he'd eaten in the field, English food was hardly scary.

"No, seriously. Not even kidding. I modeled some swimsuits at a local event as a favor for a friend. It was some big ass charity ball to help with sime like...big repairs for that part of the city." Fat load of good it had done, since all the work done had been demolished in the plate collapse, but it was that thought, right?

Reno could hope, but you know what they say about hopes and wishes and seeing which fills ups faster when tested against reality. Maki really didn't know what he was getting into and maybe Reno didn't either considering Maki wasn't the typical person he'd have the balls to go for.

"You've modeled before?" Maki looked at Reno incredulously. He really didn't see the type but the image of Reno modelling swimwear definitely suggested that he had a nice body under all those clothes.

"I guess I really will have to keep you in mind, sho." Which was fine by Maki.

"You ever want a private viewing, you just let me know," Reno drawled, cocking a brow and smirking before turning his attention more fully to navigating his meal for a moment. He didn't have the most refined manners, but more from lack of experience than lack of effort. He was good about keeping himself clean, but also crammed a napkin into his collar as an impromptu bib. He licked his fingers on occasion and picked his teeth with his fork, but really didn't go slack-jawed or sloppy at any point. Certainly not as refined or prim like Toudou, but perhaps more honest with himself.

He definitely wasn't being subtle about his interests!

"Yeah. I modeled for a friend, like I said. There's this club back in my town that holds all kind of events, usually just for entertainment, but there were some city issues going on and they wanted to help rebuild, so they held an event as a charity and asked me in. I really shouldn't have, because like...professional image and all, and my boss was a little irritated, but whatever, yo. I don't care. I wanted to have fun and I owed the guy, so swimwear it was! It was fun, though. They were pretty generous with the compensation, too, so."

Maki was much more refined with his own eating habits but that was from years of good habits being drilled into him. It wasn't something he regretted, and it didn't make him stuck up to people who had habits that were less than stellar. He was friends with Tadokoro after all and that man could eat like a bear.

His cheeks stayed flush as he pictured Rin in a swim suit. The image shifted from a more trunks styled kind to a full on speedo and both were nice. He had to wonder if his mental image was anywhere close to the real thing or not.

"Maybe in the spring you can show me." He smiled, the idea that this relationship might last until then was yet to be seen of course, but it was something nice to hope for. "You can go to one of my races too."

"Maybe I'll know how to ride a bike by then?" he suggested with a cheeky smile, flipping his hair out of his face and licking his lips before reaching up to wave at the server and point at his table, indicating he wanted dessert soon. The server nodded and Reno went back to gazing appreciatively at his company.

Maki wasn't the only one wondering about swimsuits at that moment.

"I'll go to more than one. I've got all the time in the world and I intend to use it well."

"Ah...There probably wont be any races till the spring." Not that it meant Maki wouldn't be biking. "You can try cycling with me once you learn." Maki would offer to teach Reno except he knew he was a horrible teacher.

He was finishing up with his own food, still picking at the onion rings and mozzerella sticks that were left and if he'd been thinking about kisses he might have laid off the onions, but this was the guy who enjoyed vinaigrette, green olives, and anchovies all in one sitting.

"I'd like to ride with you, sho." And he didn't mean that in a sexual way, but it might have come out that way.

"You know I love that this whole conversation can be taken in entirely different context and still sound like awesome plans, right? I'm not even going to pretend," the redhead chimed merrily, bobbing his head side to side and wiggling in his seat before lifting his drink and chugging several large swallows.

Maki liked all the smelly, tangy foods, Reno liked all the meats and beers. Realistically, neither one was likely to complain about the other. At least in reno's case, he was damned good at tolerating some pretty unusual shit.

"Seriously though, hook me up. I'll buy a bike right now, I don't give a shit. I'll learn. Come Spring I'll be like some...biking savant or somethin', yo. You just show me what to do and I'll hop to it. I'm a quick learner."

Taken in different...It took Maki awhile to catch up to what Reno meant, but once he did he nearly choked on his drink and his cheeks turned red again. He covered his face with his free hand and tried not to look embarrassed but it was too late for that.

Making dinner together might prove difficult with their various taste, but surely they could find a compromise of some sort. At least Maki could cook and if Reno could grill they'd both be happy one way or the other.

He ended up laughing at how eager Reno sounded. "It's not that simple!" Well for some people it was. Onoda had proven him wrong, so maybe Reno could to. "But sure, I'll show you the bike shop and you can pick out something you like tonight, sho."

Challenge given and accepted. If Reno wanted to prove his worth then he could do it or have all the regrets later.

Unlikely. Chances were good Reno was going to look like an idiot, but he didn't mind. Shame was one thing the redhead had never really learned. Especially since it always got him delightful results like a charmingly embarrassed Maki. Then again, for how flustered the guy got, Reno was willing to bet the guy wasn't exactly well-versed in the kind of team sports Reno was thinking about.

"Awesome!" and that was honest excitement, because shit if he wasn't about to do something new and cool with his hot new boyfriend. Yeah, about that.

"So if I ask you out again right now and you say yes, that makes us legit-ish, right? Like if I go home I get to say, like..."I got this boyfriend, yo, and he's cute as shit. Rides bikes and stuff. Gonna design me a sweet thong." Right? Because I am. asking you out again. We're gonna do dinner and I'm gonna buy a bike and look stupid trying to ride it and you're gonna be totally enamored and the next date is gonna be great, too. You'll see."
