“Guess that makes me extra extra lucky you happened to still be in town today,” Aoba observed, though it fell flat as a lighthearted remark even before it had left his mouth and he realized it, too. He sighed immediately afterwards. “Sorry, that came out sounding more flippant than I meant.”
It did assure Aoba of something, though: he needed to tell Declan where he’d really come from. Aoba didn’t know if not being completely honest even mattered when no one so far even seemed to care, but the more Declan did for him, the more Aoba felt unworthy of it. The least Aoba could do in return was tell Declan the whole truth.
